Who Said Women Over 50 Have to Become More Serious?

Good afternoon, beautiful Bold Coffee Talk family!

Can we talk about something that has been on my mind? Who decided that getting older means we have to become more serious? Somewhere along the way, society created this imaginary rulebook for women. At a certain age, we’re supposedly expected to dress differently, behave differently, speak more quietly, and become a little less adventurous. But here’s my question.

Who wrote those rules, and why are we still following them?

I’m 52, and I still want to laugh until my stomach hurts. I still want to wear something beautiful simply because I feel good in it. I still want spontaneous afternoons, music that makes me dance, and conversations that keep me up longer than I intended..and yes, sometimes I want to do absolutely nothing without explaining myself to anybody. I don’t believe getting older should mean becoming less interesting. If anything, shouldn’t it mean becoming more interesting?

Think about everything we’ve experienced. We’ve raised families, built careers, made mistakes, celebrated victories, experienced disappointments, and collected enough life lessons to fill several books. We’ve earned our wisdom. But somewhere between responsibility and maturity, some women begin to feel that having fun is something they should have outgrown. I disagree. I think there’s something beautiful about a woman who has lived long enough to understand that every moment doesn’t require seriousness. A woman who can laugh at herself. A woman who still gets excited about trying something new.

A woman who doesn’t need to apologize for enjoying her own company..and especially a woman who understands that growing older doesn’t mean becoming invisible. Sometimes I look at women in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s who are still traveling, dancing, dating, learning, and reinventing themselves..and I think, that’s exactly how life should be. Not because we’re trying to hold on to our younger years. But because we’re still here, still curious, and still entitled to enjoy our lives.

Here’s what I’d love to discuss around our coffee table today:

Do you think women become more confident and adventurous after 50, or do you think society still pressures us to tone ourselves down..and tell me something else: What’s one thing you still love doing that someone might say you’re too old for?

I have a feeling we’re going to get some interesting answers!

Keep laughing, keep exploring, and never let anyone convince you that your best experiences have an expiration date.
