The Beautiful Surprise of Learning From Our Grown Children

Good morning, my beautiful Bold Coffee Talk family!

I hope your Wednesday is filled with a little laughter and something that makes your heart smile. I’ve been thinking about something lately. There comes a moment in motherhood when you realize something has changed. For years, we were the ones teaching our children everything. How to tie their shoes. How to ride a bicycle. How to make good decisions. How to navigate friendships, relationships, disappointments, and life’s unexpected challenges. We were the ones answering all the questions..and then, almost without noticing, something shifts.

Suddenly, our grown children are teaching US things. Maybe it’s something technological. You ask your daughter how to do something on your phone, and she responds, Mom, I showed you this already..or your son gives you advice about a situation you’re dealing with..and you find yourself thinking, Wait a minute. When did you become the wise one?

It’s funny, but it’s also beautiful. Because somewhere between childhood and adulthood, the relationship begins to evolve. They’re no longer looking to us for every answer. They’re developing their own perspectives, building their own lives, and becoming people we can learn from..and perhaps one of the greatest gifts of motherhood is realizing that raising children isn’t only about preparing them for the world.

It’s also about getting to know the adults they become. Sometimes they challenge our thinking. Sometimes they introduce us to something new..and sometimes they remind us of lessons we taught them years ago but may have forgotten ourselves.

Maybe that’s one of the unexpected rewards of getting older: discovering that the people we spent years teaching have something wonderful to teach us, too. Of course, we’ll always be their mothers. We’ll still worry. We’ll still offer advice they didn’t ask for..and we’ll probably always see a little bit of the children they once were.

But there’s something special about reaching a stage where you can sit across from your grown child and simply enjoy getting to know the person they’ve become. Not just as your child. But as an adult with their own wisdom, dreams, and experiences.

🌸 A Little Journal Reflection

What’s something your grown child has taught you that genuinely surprised you? Was it practical advice, a different way of looking at life, or perhaps a lesson about yourself..and for those whose children are still young, what do you imagine that relationship will look like someday? As we continue through the week, let’s appreciate how relationships grow and change with time.Sometimes the greatest lessons come from the very people we once held in our arms.

Wishing you a beautiful Wednesday filled with love, laughter, and meaningful connections.
