Good afternoon, my beautiful Bold Coffee Talk family.
Today, I want to ask you something a little more personal. When was the last time you did something simply because it made you happy? Not because your children needed something. Not because your spouse wanted to go somewhere. Not because there was an appointment, obligation, birthday, or family gathering. But because you wanted to. It’s an interesting question, isn’t it?
Sometimes we become so accustomed to organizing our lives around everyone else’s schedules that we forget what an afternoon entirely of our own choosing feels like. I remember being younger and having so many ideas about the things I wanted to experience. Places I wanted to visit. Things I wanted to learn. Little adventures I imagined taking someday. But life moves quickly. Children grow up. Careers demand attention. Responsibilities multiply..and before we realize it, the things we once wanted become things we keep promising ourselves we’ll eventually get around to.
I don’t think that happens because we stop dreaming. I think sometimes we simply become very good at postponing ourselves..and there’s a difference. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how important it is to have something in life that belongs entirely to us. Something that isn’t connected to being a mother, wife, employee, or the person everyone calls when something needs to be handled. Maybe it’s learning to play an instrument. Maybe it’s taking yourself out to lunch. Maybe it’s spending an afternoon browsing a bookstore without checking the time..or perhaps it’s finally planning that trip you’ve been talking about for years.
Whatever it is, I think we need those moments. Not because our everyday responsibilities are unimportant..But because we’re individuals with interests, personalities, dreams, and desires that deserve attention too..and I don’t want to reach another birthday realizing I’ve spent another year saying, I’ll do that someday. I want to make room for someday now. Even if it begins with something small.
A new hobby. A quiet morning. An unexpected adventure. A little more time doing something that makes me smile. Because happiness doesn’t always arrive through enormous life changes. Sometimes it begins when we finally give ourselves permission to enjoy an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.
☕ A Question for Your Journal
What is one thing you’ve been wanting to do for yourself but keep putting off..AND here’s the harder question:
What’s really stopping you? Is it time, money, responsibility, guilt, or simply the habit of putting yourself last?
Write about it today. Then consider one small step you could take toward making it happen. You don’t need to change your entire life to begin making more room for yourself. Sometimes one afternoon is a beautiful beginning.
Until our next coffee together, remember that your interests and dreams still deserve a place in your life.
